5th National Swachh Iconic Places review in Mumbai Significant Progress in Sanitation at 20 Locations

Why in news?

• The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and State Government agencies, local administrations and the Trusts/ Boards of the Swachh Iconic Places (SIPs) came together for a two-day consultation in Mumbai, represented by over 100 delegates from across the country.
• The consultation included a field visit to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus where systematic Sanitation and restoration work is underway.
• The Swachh Iconic Places initiative aims to achieve a distinctly higher level of sanitation at these places, especially in the peripheries and approach areas. Following the clarion call by the Prime Minister to make Swachhata everybody’s business, the Centre and selected States have taken up joint efforts for making the country’s iconic places Swachh.
• The special Swachhata initiatives at these places have received CSR support from public and private companies.
• During the consultation, a review was also done of the work already taken up at the 20 Phase-I and Phase-II SIPs. These SIPs demonstrated significant progress in development of Sanitation facilities.
• The extensive Swachhata related efforts at these iconic places were exhibited at the consultation which underlined the range of ODF sustainability measures taken up by the State.

The Swachh Iconic Places

• The Swachh Iconic Places is an initiative under the Swachh Bharat Mission. It is a special clean-up initiative focused on select iconic heritage, spiritual and cultural places in the country.
• The initiative is being coordinated by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in association with the Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Tourism and the concerned State governments.

Phase I coverage of iconic places

• Under Phase 1 of this initiative, the following iconic places are being covered for an intensive clean up.

1. Vaishno Devi, Jammu and Kashmir
2. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Maharashtra
3. Taj Mahal, Uttar Pradesh
4. Tirupati Temple, Andhra Pradesh
5. Golden Temple, Punjab
6. Manikarnika Ghat, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
7. Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Rajasthan
8. Meenakshi Temple, Tamil Nadu
9. Kamakhya Temple, Assam
10. Jagannath Puri, Odisha

• The Phase II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative covers the following.

3. Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain
4. Char Minar, Hyderabad
5. Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assissi, Goa
6. Adi Shankaracharya’s abode Kaladi in Ernakulam

9. Gaya Tirth in Bihar
10. Somnath temple in Gujarat.
