Mercer’s Quality Of Living Survey

Why in news?

• Global consulting firm Mercer has released its annual quality of living survey in which 231 cities across the globe were ranked based on factors such as healthcare, education, public services, recreation, crime, housing and personal freedom.
• Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is ranked at 105 in Mercer’s Quality Of Living Index and is the number one city from India.

Rank of India cities?

• According to a recent report, Hyderabad and Pune are still the most liveable cities in India for expatriates, though the global rank of both these cities remained at 143.
• These cities were followed by other India metropolitan areas of Bengaluru (149), Mumbai (154) and New Delhi (162). It should be noted that the rankings of these three cities remain unchanged from last year’s ranking for overall quality of living.
• The least safe city in the south Asia region is Pakistan’s Karachi which has been ranked at 226th spot. Globally, Iraq’s capital Baghdad is at the bottom of the list due to an economic, security and societal crisis.
• The 21st report titled ‘Quality of Living survey’ was published by Mercer, the world’s largest human resources consulting firm.
• The survey is conducted annually to enable multinational companies and other organisations to compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments.
• Globally, Vienna topped the ranking for the tenth consecutive year, closely followed by Zurich (2).
• In joint third place are Auckland, Munich and Vancouver – the highest ranking city in North America for the last 10 years.
