Cyclone Amphan: Odisha, West Bengal begin evacuation as ‘Super Cyclone’ approaches east coast

Recently, the National Crisis Management Committee reviewed the preparedness for the impending cyclone Amphan. At the national level, Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) are the key committees involved in the top-level decision-making related to Disaster Management.

Strong winds will blow

• The epicenter of the storm is 980 km from Paradip in Odisha. 1,30 km from Digha in South West Bengal. 1,250 km south-west and from Khepupara in Bangladesh. Is in the southwest.
• Due to this effect, winds can move at a speed of 150 km per hour in the southern part of the Bay of Bengal, 190 km per hour in the central part.

Where can there be an effect of Amphan?

• The storm may cause heavy rains in 24 North and South Parganas of West Bengal, Kolkata, East and West Midnapore, Howrah and Hooghly.
• Odisha may witness thunderstorms with low intensity in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Balasore, Bhradak, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts.

• It is noteworthy that the current cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ was named by Thailand.
• Naming was started in the mid-1900s to warn people of the danger from cyclonic storm in time.
