DRDO develops Ultra Violet Disinfection Tower

• The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has developed an
  ultra violet (UV) disinfection tower
• The UV Disinfection tower can be operated through mobile phone or laptop
  remotely
• It is for chemical free and rapid disinfection and the tower is to be highly helpful in
  high infection prone areas

Salient highlights of Ultra Violet Disinfection Tower

• The equipment named UV blaster is a UV based area sanitizer designed and
  developed by Laser Science & Technology Centre (LASTEC), the Delhi based premier
  laboratory of DRDO
• The UV Blaster is useful for high tech surfaces like electronic equipment,
  computers and other gadgets in laboratories and offices that are not suitable for
  disinfection with chemical methods
• The product is also effective for areas with large flow of people such as airports,
  shopping malls, metros, hotels, factories, offices, etc
• The UV based area sanitizer may be used by remote operation through laptop or
  mobile phone using wifi link
• The UV Blaster will be helpful in the disinfection of high tech surfaces such as
  computers, electronic equipment and other forms of gadgets in laboratories and offices
• These are the items that are not suitable for disinfection through chemical methods
  The equipment has six lamps each with 43 watts of UV-C power at 254 nm wavelength
  for 360 degree illumination
• For a room of about 12 x 12 feet dimension, the disinfection time is about 10
  minutes and 30 minutes for 400 square feet area by positioning the equipment at
  different places within the room
• This sanitizer switches off on accidental opening of room or human intervention
• One more salient safety feature of the product is the key to arm operation
• The product will also be useful for the areas with a large flow of people such as
  metros, airports, shopping malls, hotels, factories, offices, etc

What is “Laser Science and Technology Centre (LASTEC)”?

• It is a laboratory of the Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO) –
  Located in Delhi
• It is the main DRDO lab involved in the development of Lasers and related
  technologies
• LASTEC functions under the DRDO Directorate of Electronics & Computer Science
• LASTEC’s primary focus is the research and development of various laser
  materials, components and laser systems, including High Power Lasers (HPL) for
  defense-applications

  Electro-Optic Counter Measures (EOCM), low and High Power Lasers (HPL)
