The Government of India recently provided GI Tag to  Sohrai Khovar painting of Jharkhand.

Sohrai Khovar painting:

• Jharkhand’s Sohrai Khovar painting is a traditional and ritualistic mural art. It is practised by local tribal women during local harvest and marriage seasons. The art is drawn using the local, naturally available soils of different colours in the area of the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand.
• The art is traditionally painted on the walls of mud houses. It is now seen on other surfaces, too.
• The style features a profusion of lines, dots, animal figures, and plants, often representing religious iconography.

What is geographic notation?

• Geographical indications of Geographical Indications in India are provided on the basis of Geographical Indication Act 1999 (Registration and Security).
• It is a sign that ensures the identification of goods, this identification is provided due to the agricultural products, manufactured products and natural commodities originating in their particular region (state / country).
• Craftsmen are the backbone of the Indian handicrafts sector and have special skills, technical and traditional craftsmanship inherent in them.
• Geographical Indicator is usually given for 10 years and it has to be renewed after 10 years.
