•  The Indian Navy has inducted an advanced anti-torpedo decoy system called “Maareech” that is
  capable of being fired from all frontline ships
• “Maareech” has been designed and developed indigenously by the Defense Research and
  Development Organization (DRDO)
• It is capable of detecting, locating and neutralizing incoming torpedo

Salient features of Anti Torpedo Decoy System “Maareech”

• Anti-Submarine Warfare capability of the Indian Navy has received a major boost with the
  conclusion of a contract for Advanced Torpedo Decoy System Maareech capable of being fired from
  all frontline warships.
• Bharat Electronics Limited, a Defense PSU, will undertake the production of this decoy system
• The prototype of the system was installed onboard and a nominated naval platform had
  successfully completed all user evaluation trials and demonstrated the features as per the Naval
  Staff Qualification Requirements
• The induction is the joint resolution of the Indian Navy and Defense Research and Development
  Organization (DRDO) towards the indigenous development of Defense technology
• This has given a major fillip to the Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and the country’s
  resolve to become ‘Atmanirbhar’ in niche technology
• The production of the Anti-Torpedo Decoy System will be undertaken by Bengaluru
  headquartered state-owned company Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)
• The prototype of the Anti-Torpedo Decoy System had successfully completed the trails
• During the evaluation trials, the features demonstrated by the prototype has been as per the
  Qualification Requirements set by the Naval Staff

• A Torpedo is a self-propelled underwater missile that can be launched from a surface vessel,
  submarine, and airplane
• During a Torpedo attack, the Torpedo Defense System helps in detecting a torpedo
• It further applies countermeasures that are required for the protection of the naval platform

What is “Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL)”?

• The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory is an Indian defense laboratory of the Defense
  Research and Development Organization
• Located in Visakhapatnam, its main function is the research and development of underwater
  weapons and associated systems
• NSTL is organized under DRDO’s Directorate of Naval R&D
• NSTL is involved in the design, development, testing, evaluation and production of underwater
  weapons and their associated weapon control systems
• These include torpedoes, mines, decoys, targets, simulators, Fire Control Systems and weapon
  launchers

What is “Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL)”?

• The Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory or NPOL is a laboratory of the Defense
  Research and Development Organization (DRDO), under the Ministry of Defense, India
• It is situated in Thrikkakara, Kochi, Kerala. NPOL is responsible for the Research &
  Development of sonar systems, technologies for underwater surveillance, study of ocean
  environment and underwater materials
• NPOL is developing a technology called seabed arrays that will be laid over the seabed surface
  for ocean surveillance which will provide measurements and inform the control centre about the
  happenings underneath through satellite
• DRDO is planning a dedicated satellite for the coastal surveillance system
