United States is facing nationwide protests over the homicide death of an African American George Floyd

The unrest comes as the U.S. is still in the grip of the pandemic and in economic crisis

• Protests nationwide of USA is being continued for the seventh day in the wake of the homicide
  death of George Floyd in Minneapolis
• President Donald Trump said he would deploy the military in cities and states if local authorities
  could not bring the violence under control
• Protests took place in multiple cities across the state this week. In Kansas City, protests
  prompted the mayor to enact a curfew and request assistance from the Missouri National Guard

Anger outbreak in USA

• A white former Minneapolis police officer was shown in video footage using his knee to pin an
  unarmed black man’s neck to the street and the black man died
• The white police man was charged with murder on Friday in the man’s death, an incident that
  has unleashed four nights of violent protests in the country
• Medical Examiner on Monday declared the death of George Floyd a homicide, saying he died of
  “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual restraint, and neck compression
• Chavin – the white police officer has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder
  and manslaughter
• President Donald Trump said he would deploy the military in cities and states if local authorities
  could not bring the violence under control
• Mayors and governors must establish an overwhelming law enforcement presence until the
  violence has been quelled

Nationwide Protest and Trump’s actions

• Over 75 cities have seen protests over the murder of Mr. Floyd
• The charges brought by Hennepin County prosecutors came after a third night of arson, looting
  and vandalism in which protesters set fire to a police station
• The National Guard was deployed to help restore order in Minnesota’s largest city
• Authorities had hoped Chauvin’s arrest would allay public anger and avert continued unrest
• Another group of protesters later converged near the city’s Fifth Precinct station until police
  arrived and fired tear gas and plastic bullets to break up that gathering
• Law enforcement kept a mostly low profile, a strategy seemingly calculated to reduce the risk of
  violent confrontations
• Among the larger cities with protests on Friday were Los Angeles, Denver, Houston, Atlanta and
  Louisville
• Thousands of protesters filled the streets of New York City’s Brooklyn borough near the Barclays
  Center indoor arena
• Police armed with batons and pepper spray made scores of arrests in sometimes violent clashes

What is “Black Lives Matter Movement”?

• It is an international human rights movement, originating in the African-American community
  those campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people
• BLM regularly holds protests speaking out against police killings of black people, and broader
  issues such as racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality in the United States criminal
  justice system
• In 2013, the movement began with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media
  after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon
  Martin in February 2012
• The phrase “All Lives Matter” sprang up as a response to the Black Lives Matter movement, but
  has been criticized for dismissing or misunderstanding the message of “Black Lives Matter”
• The movement began in 2013. The movement spread to Canada, Australia and Germany as well
