“Atal Rankings of Institutions” on ARIIA – 2020 “Innovative Achievements – 2020” is announced by the Government

IIT Madras is the best institute under the institute of national importance category

• The Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2020 has
  been released by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu
• Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has topped the list and emerged as
  the best institute of national importance
• Among the self finance category, SR Engineering College, Telangana topped the
  ARIIA Ranking 2020

Highlights of the announcement

• Seven IITs of the country have made it to the list of institutes of national
  importance, central universities and centrally funded technical institutes
  (CFTIs)
• IIT Bombay has bagged the second spot, while IIT Delhi was ranked number 3
• The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore has ranked fourth, while IIT
  Kharagpur was at the fifth position in the list
• In the category of private institutions, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology
  (KIIT), Odisha was the top performer
• According to a report by The Indian Express, for the first time, ARIIA 2020 had
  a special prize category for women-only higher educational institutions.
• The top rank was bagged by Avinashlingam Institute for Home Sciences and
  Higher Education in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
• The second position was secured by Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University
  for Women, New Delhi
• The other five categories included centrally funded institutions, state-funded
  universities, state-funded autonomous institutions, private/deemed
  universities, private institutions
• In the government and government aided universities, the top position was
  secured by Institute of Chemical Technology (Maharashtra), followed by Panjab
  University (Chandigarh) and Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture
  University (Haryana
• College of Engineering Pune got the top rank in the government or
  government-aided college’s category
• PES College of Engineering and Coimbatore Institute of Technology got the
  second and third place respectively
• The Institute of Chemical Technology, Maharashtra was the top performer in
  State Funded Universities category

Indicators for the rankings

• The major indicators of the rankings are innovations in governance of
  institution, innovative learning methods and courses, technology transfer and
  commercialization
• Intellectual property generation, promotion and supporting entrepreneurship
  development, awareness activities
• These aim in promoting idea generation and innovation, support innovations
  and start ups, expenses spent and revenue generated

Background of ARIIA – 2020

• ARIIA, 2020 was launched by Ministry of Education
• It is to be noted that the Ministry of Human Resources and Development was
  renamed to Ministry Education
• This step was taken when the GoI unveiled National Education Policy, 2020
• The ARIIA is implemented by All India council for Technical Education (AICTE)
• In 2019, IIT Madras emerged as the top Innovative Institution and also was one
  of the top 10 institutes in Public funded categories
