Israel successfully tested “Arrow-2” Ballistic Missile Interceptor

Israel has successfully tested its advanced missile defence system, “Arrow-2” ballistic missile interceptor. The Missile test was conducted in the test site in Central Israel over the Mediterranean Sea. The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) of the United States of America along with Israeli Air Force and Israel Aerospace Industries conducted the testing.

Arrow-2 interceptor

• Arrow-2 system is a part of the multi-layered system Israel.
• The System is developed to defend against both short- and mid-range rockets.
• Arrow-2 system is capable to defend against threats from outside the atmosphere.
• Israel and the United States (US) jointly tested Arrow-3 successfully in 2019 in Alaska.
• The system was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries and Boeing and became operational in January 2017.
• The Arrow-2 has been in use even longer and deployed in recent years to counter Syrian missiles.

India and Arrow Missiles

• Arrow missiles were developed under the full support of the USA. Apart from Israel, no country has purchased the entire arrow system from the US.
• In 1999, the Indian government had demanded the purchase of an Aero missile from Israel.
• The United States vetoed the request citing MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime).
• Missile technology control system
• It is a multilateral export control regime.
• India is also a part of it. It was formed in 1987 by G7 industrialized countries.
• This limits the risks of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
• It mainly focuses on rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Israel-Lebanon conflict

• The conflict involves a series of military conflicts between Israel, Syria and Lebanon.
• It also includes various militias from within Lebanon.
• The conflict was at its peak during the Lebanese civil war.
• The 2007 Lebanon War was fought between Israel and Hezbollah.
• The conflict began when Hezbollah’s fighters fired rockets at the Israeli border.

Israel-Gaza conflict

• It is a part of the Israeli-Palestine conflicts.
• The conflict began after the Islamic political party Hamas won the election and lost to Palestine in 2005–06.
• After the elections, Palestinian militias attacked Israel from Gaza.
