International Day of Peace: 21 September

• International Day of Peace is observed globally on 21st September every year.
• It is observed to spread awareness and preach peace and harmony all across the globe.
• On this day, the body encourages countries to observe the day by creating an environment of “24 hours of non-violence”.

Theme for world peace day 2020 is- “Shaping Peace Together”.

History of International Day of Peace:

• The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly.
• Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
• The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.
• United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA.
• It was founded on 24 October 1945.
• Mr Antonio Guterres is the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
