Indian Naval Ship Kavaratti has been Commissioned into the Indian Navy

INS Kavaratti is the last of the four indigenously- built ASW stealth corvettes

• Indian navy has commissioned the Anti-Submarine Warfare stealth corvette INS
  Kavaratti into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam
• INS Kavaratti is the last of the four indigenously-built ASW stealth corvettes
  under Project 28 (Kamorta class)
• It has been designed by the Directorate of Naval Design, the Indian Navys inhouse wing

Key facts of the INS Kavaratti

• It is the last of four indigenously-built ASW under ‘Project 28’ or or Kamortaclass corvettes of the Navy
• It’s a class of ASWs currently in service with the Navy
• ‘Project 28’ was approved in 2003. The other three warships under this project
  are INS Kamorta (commissioned in 2014), INS Kadmatt (2016) and INS Kiltan
  (2017)
• INS Kavaratti has up to 90% indigenous content. The use of carbon composites
  to build it has been described as a ‘commendable feat achieved in Indian
  shipbuilding
• The warship has been designed by the Navy’s in-house organization, the
  Directorate of Naval Design (DND)
• Kolkata’s Garden Research Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), meanwhile,
  have built it
• Further, it has state-of-the-art weapons and a sensor that can detect and take
  action against hostile submarines
• It also has a good endurance for long-range deployments
• It has completed sea-trials of all its systems fitted onboard and, hence, will be
  commissioned as a combat-ready platform
• INS Kavaratti derives its name from the eponymous INS Kavaratti, which was
  an Arnala class missile corvette
• The older INS Kavaratti operated during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war

What is “Project 28”?

• Under the project, the first ship that was constructed is INS Kamorta whose
  construction began in 2005 under the project
• Under this project, four corvettes were commissioned into the Indian Navy
• The four corvettes include- INS Kamorta that was commissioned in 2014, INS
  Kadmatt commissioned in 2016, INS Kiltan in 2017 and the INS Kavaratti is
  being commissioned in 2020
• All these four Indian Navy ships are named after the islands and archipelago of
  Lakshadweep

Role of Directorate of Naval Design (DND)

• DND (SDG) is a premier organization of the Indian Navy and the only one in the
  country for design of submarines and submersibles
• The core competencies of the organization are the design of state-of-the-art
  underwater platforms and comprehensive end to end design support during
  project execution
• Support for indigenous development of equipment and submarine systems is
  another thrust area towards realizing the overarching strategic goals of the
  Indian Navy
• Through its participation in various submarine programmes, the organization
  has acquired capabilities to undertake platform design of all types of
  submarines
• It has a unique knowledge base, advanced design tools as well as a competent
  and motivated design team comprising of uniformed personnel, civilian officers
  and staff from naval architecture, engineering and electrical specializations
• The Directorate is organized in functional groups such as hull structures,
  engineering or electrical systems, weapons & sensors, propulsion systems,
  configuration control, materials, etc. to nurture vertical specialization and
  acquire in-depth knowledge in respective areas for all classes of submarines
