Archaeologists have made a significant discovery in the form of a 1,000-year-old sculpture in Telangana’s Siddipet district.
This extraordinary find, a ‘Dvarapala’ sculpture representing Vijaya, the gatekeeper of Lord Vishnu, surpasses any previously reported findings in Telangana.
Standing six feet above the ground and three feet below, with a thickness of 9 inches, the sculpture was carved out of granite stone in relief.
The recently discovered sculpture shows exquisite craftsmanship, with meticulous attention to detail.
Adorned with a long ‘Kirita’ (crown) on the head and a profusion of ornaments on the body, this idol of Vijaya has ‘Gadh’ and ‘Suchi Mudra’ in the original two hands, while the additional two hands have ‘Sankhu’ and ‘Chakra’.
These complex elements reflect the importance of the deity Vijaya in Hindu mythology.
