Estonia’s parliament has approved a law to legalize same-sex marriage, becoming the first Central European country to do so.
The move sets Estonia apart from its neighbors in the region, where same-sex marriage is illegal.
Marriage between same-sex couples is legal and recognized in 34 other countries. Of these 34, 23 allowed same-sex couples to marry through legislation, 10 through court rulings. The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001.
The Indian legal system currently does not recognize same-sex marriage and the country’s laws define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
However, in November 2018, the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality by striking down parts of section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
