The Union Ministry of Power has released a comprehensive report on the energy sector titled ‘National Energy Data: Survey and Analysis 2021-22’. This is the first report by the Energy Data Management Unit set up under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power. Contains comprehensive data compiled from FY 2016-17 to FY 2021-22 as well as trends and analysis of fuel-wise energy consumption across key end-use sectors. The report is commissioned by the Ministry of Power in coordination with NITI Aayog, various relevant Ministries and Departments, Prepared through Bureau of Energy Efficiency in collaboration with institutions and other stakeholders.

Important facts of the report

  • The report provides detailed information on energy supply and consumption patterns in various sectors of the Indian economy.
  • This description will enable better understanding of the energy profile of different sectors, sub-sectors and consumer groups.
  • The report also provides information on the impact of various policies on the reduction of carbon-dioxide emissions with energy savings and associated monetary savings.
  • The report also provides information on the impact of various energy conservation policies and their associated carbon-dioxide emission reduction and monetary savings.
  • The report will assist in analyzing the country’s energy intensity, thereby facilitating policy makers to identify areas of improvement and formulate effective policies and track the country’s progress towards the achievement of India’s Nationally Determined Contribution.

Power sector in india

  • India is the third largest producer of electricity in the world. During the financial year 2021-22, the total electricity generation in the country was 1,719 TWh, of which 1,484 TWh was generated by utilities.
  • Per capita gross electricity consumption stood at 1,208 kWh in FY2019. In fiscal year 2015, the consumption of electrical energy in agriculture was recorded as the highest (17.89%) worldwide. India has a low per capita consumption of electricity compared to most other countries, despite having low electricity tariffs.
  • The installed capacity of the Indian National Electricity Grid as on 31 March 2023 is 416.0 GW. Renewable energy plants, including large hydroelectric power plants, account for 40.7% of the total installed capacity.
  • India’s electricity sector is dominated by fossil fuels, especially coal, which produces about three-quarters of the country’s electricity. The government announced its efforts to increase investment in renewable energy.
  • The government’s 2022 draft National Electricity Plan states that the country does not need any more fossil fuel power plants by 2027, apart from those currently under construction in the utility sector.
  • It is expected that the contribution of non-fossil fuel generation is likely to reach about 44.7% of the total gross electricity generation by 2029-30.
