- Byculla (Maharashtra) Railway Station wins UNESCO Award for restoring the glory of its heritage architecture
- The 169-year-old Byculla Railway Station has received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Merit Award for Cultural Heritage Restoration and Conservation.
- Byculla Railway Station was commissioned in the year 1853
- In July 2019, a major project to restore the ancient heritage architecture of Byculla Railway Station, one of the oldest stations in India, began.
- The project is being implemented by Shaina NC, Trustee of I Love Mumbai in coordination with Railways, in association with Bajaj Trust Groups and Abha Narayan Lamba Associates, in memory of her father, former Sheriff of Mumbai and founder of I Love Mumbai and Giants International, Late Padma Shri Nana Chudasama was started as their CSR initiative.
UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation
- The ‘Asia-Pacific Heritage Award’ is being given by UNESCO since the year 2000 for the fulfillment of strategic objectives in the Asia-Pacific region.
- The purpose of this award is to promote the conservation of such cultural heritage areas, the conservation efforts of which have been started by any person or organization.
- It also encourages other property owners to undertake conservation projects within their communities, either independently or through public-private partnerships.
- This award provides a sense of pride among the people towards their heritage.
