Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Semicon India 2023 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. SemiconIndia 2023 is organized under the India Semiconductor Mission in partnership with industry and industry associations with the objective of creating a global hub for semiconductor design manufacturing and technology development.
This will help take forward the vision of the Semiconductor Mission in India. It aims to bring together world class leaders from industry, academia and research institutions. Envisages India to be a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing and technology development.Semiconic India 2023 was attended by representatives from leading companies such as Micron Technology, Applied Materials, Foxconn, SEMI, Cadence and AMD. To develop as a chip making center for investors. The theme of the conference – Promoting India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

- The Union Cabinet had approved the SEMCON India program with a financial outlay of Rs 76,000 crore in 2021 for the development of a sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem.
- The Semicon India program aims to provide support to companies that are engaged in semiconductor design, such as silicon semiconductor fabs, display fabs, etc.
- The program will encourage semiconductor and display manufacturing by facilitating capital support and technical collaboration.
India’s position in the field of semiconductor
- India is currently dependent on imports for semiconductor chips.
- This market is expected to grow from $24 billion to $100 billion by 2025.
- The Union Cabinet has allocated an amount of Rs 76,000 crore to support the development of the ‘semiconductors and display manufacturing ecosystem’.
- Under this, 50 percent amount will be provided to encourage design companies to design chips.
- India has launched the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS).
- The Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme has been launched to support at least 20 domestic companies involved in semiconductor design in the year 2021.
- Semiconductor consumption in India is estimated to cross US$ 80 billion by 2026 and US$ 110 billion by 2030.
