The QS World University Rankings for the year 2024 have been released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds. This year’s ranking covers 1,500 institutions and adds three new indicators: sustainability, employment outcomes and international research network. In addition, several universities have significantly improved their position in this year’s ranking, such as Imperial College London, which jumped to second place. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has taken the first place in this ranking, while the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford are second and third respectively. This year’s ranking includes sustainability as a key criterion, reflecting the changing missions of students and universities.

India’s position in QS World University Rankings 2024

  • In this edition of the ranking, with 46 universities, the Indian higher education system is ranked seventh globally and third in Asia, behind only Japan (49 universities) and China (71 universities).
  • A total of 61% of Indian universities improved their rankings this time, with IIT Bombay securing the top spot in India, while 24% retained their position from last year.

India’s performance in research and collaboration

  • Citations per faculty: India’s performance in this regard is excellent, with a score of 37.8, higher than the global average of 23.5.
  • It ranks second in Asia among countries with universities ranked more than 10.
  • However, India lags behind in the international faculty ratio and international student ratio indicators, indicating the need for more international collaboration and exchange.

Top Indian Educational Institutions in India

  • IIT Bombay: Leading in India, IIT Bombay moved up from 149th place in 2024 to 118th in 2025.
  • IIT Delhi: Ranked 2nd in India, dropping 47 spots from 197 to 150.
  • IIT Indore: IIT Indore is the only Indian institute to drop in the rankings, dropping from 454 to 477.
  • New Entries: Symbiosis International (Deemed University) has entered the top 20 universities and is ranked between 641-650 globally.
