  • The Sakharov Prize was started in 1988 and is awarded to individuals and organisations defending human rights and democracy.
  • In 2023, this award was given to Mahsa Amini and the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement in Iran.
  • The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been named after Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov.
