  • Former Punjab assembly deputy speaker Bir Devinder Singh passes away at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
  • Having started out as a leader of the All India Students’ Federation (AISSF), Bir Devinder was elected MLA for the first time from Sirhind in 1980 on a Congress ticket.
  • He later won from the Kharar assembly constituency in 2002. He served as the deputy speaker of the Vidhan Sabha between 2003 and 2004 during the Amarinder Singh-led Congress regime in Punjab.
  • He was expelled from the Congress in 2016 and joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) in 2019. Leaders cutting across political lines expressed grief over Bir Devinder’s demise.
  • The All India Students’ Federation (AISF) is a prominent student organization in India. It was founded in 1936 with the objective of advocating for the rights and welfare of students across the country.
  • The AISF has historically been associated with the Communist Party of India and has played an active role in various student movements and struggles.
