  • Fossil remains of a 167-million-year-old long-necked, plant-eating dicraeosaurid dinosaur have been discovered in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

Tharosaurus indicus’ (Tharosaurus indicus)

  • Scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have managed to unearth the prehistoric finds.
  • Scientists have named this dinosaur fossil ‘Tharosaurus indicus ‘ , referring to the Thar Desert and the country of origin where the remains were found.
  • Scientists believe that these fossils belong to a new species of dinosaur, which is unknown to man. These fossils were collected from Jaisalmer region in 2018 and a group of six researchers from both the above-mentioned institutes spent almost 20 years studying them. Spent five years.
  • The researchers said that since the fossils were found in rocks about 167 million years old, this makes the Indian sauropod not only the oldest known dicraeosaurid , but also the oldest diplodocoid globally . which includes dacryosaurids and other closely related sauropods).
  • Prior to this, fossils of dacryosaurid dinosaurs had been discovered in North and South America, Africa and China but never in India.
