  • World governing body FIFA has lifted the ban on the Sri Lankan Football Federation (FFSL).
  • The ban was imposed in January 2023 due to government interference in the affairs of the federation.
  • The lifting of the ban will give a big boost to Sri Lankan football. This means the country’s national team will be able to resume international competition and the FFSL will be able to resume its development programmes.
  • The decision by the FIFA bureau to lift the ban has been welcomed by the Sri Lankan government and the country’s football community.

Sri Lanka Football Federation

  • The Sri Lanka national football team represents Sri Lanka in association football and is controlled by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, the governing body of football in Sri Lanka.
  • Sri Lanka’s home grounds are the Sugathadasa Stadium and the Kalutara Stadium. The Sri Lankan team was known as the Ceylon national football team until 1972 when Ceylon was renamed Sri Lanka.
  • A member of the AFC, the team has made its first appearance in a FIFA World Cup or AFC Asian Cup final.
