  • Sinn Fein’s Michelle O’Neill has been appointed First Minister of Northern Ireland.
  • After two full years without a functioning government, The regional parliament has formally appointed Sinn Fein’s Michelle O’Neill, Northern Ireland’s first minister.
  • This is the first time an Irish nationalist is leading the United Kingdom territory’s devolved government.
  • The DUP’s Emma Little-Pengelly has been appointed Deputy First Minister.
  • The return of power-sharing came after the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) ended its boycott over post-Brexit trade rules.
  • Under power-sharing rules, the devolved government in Northern Ireland can only operate on a cross-community basis with the participation of both unionists and nationalists.
