  • Renowned economist, Utsa Patnaik has been selected for the 2023 Malcolm Adisesia Award. The award is given each year by the Malcolm and Elizabeth Adisesia Trust.
  • The prestigious National Award honors nominations received by outstanding social scientists selected by a national level jury specially constituted for the purpose.
  • The jury unanimously selected Professor Patnaik as the recipient of the award this year. The previous winner of the award was Indian economist Prabhat Patnaik, who won it in 2022.
  • Utsa Patnaik is a renowned economist of national and international repute who has made significant contributions in the fields of agricultural studies, political economy, history of economic ideas, and colonialism and imperialism.
  • He has written many books and articles on various topics related to development economics such as agrarian relations, farmers’ movements, food security, poverty alleviation, fiscal policy, trade policy, debt crisis, globalization, neoliberalism, capitalism, socialism, Marxism-Leninism.

Malcolm Adiseshiya Award

  • It is one of the most prestigious national awards in India that recognizes and honors the outstanding contributions of social scientists in the field of development studies.
  • It was established in 2000 by the Malcolm and Elizabeth Adisesia Trust.
  • The award is given each year to a mid-career social scientist who has made outstanding contributions to development studies through research, teaching, policy advocacy or public service.
  • The award consists of a citation and prize money of Rs. 2 lakh.
  • The award is given by a national level jury constituted by the Malcolm & Elizabeth Adisesia Trust from nominations received.
