A new species of butterfly “Neptis phyllora” has been discovered by researchers in the Tail Valley Wildlife Sanctuary located in Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. The discovery has been published in the journal “Tropical Lepidoptera Research”.

Neptis philara

  • This is a rare species of butterfly.
  • It is commonly known as the long-line sailor.
  • This butterfly was first described by M. Menetries of Russia in the year 1859.
  • Species of this butterfly are found in various regions of East Asia, including eastern Siberia, Korea, Japan, central and south-west China.

Speciality

  • This butterfly has serrated wings, the color of its upper wing is dark brown-black and the lower one is yellow-brown.
  • Its distinguishing feature is a white cell line forming a “hockey stick” pattern on the forewing.
  • This species belongs to the Nymphalidae family.
  • It is found in areas like evergreen forests, vegetation and rocky rivers.

Tail Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

  • This wildlife sanctuary is located in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • This sanctuary is situated on a plateau 2400 meters high.
  • It was established in the year 1995.
  • Its area is approximately 337 square km.
  • Many species of flowers and animals are found in this sanctuary.
  • Vegetation
  • Subtropical and temperate or alpine trees like pine trees, ferns, orchids, bamboo and rhododendrons are found in this sanctuary.

Wildlife

  • Endangered leopard, Himalayan squirrel, Himalayan black bear etc. are found here.
