  • Chithirai Festival related to Lord Kallazhagar (celebrated on the banks of Vaigai River in Madurai.
  • Chithirai Festival in Madurai celebrates the union of Lord Sundareshwar (Lord Shiva) and Goddess Meenakshi, the sister of Lord Vishnu.
  • The festival is also known as Chithirai Thiruvizha, Meenakshi Thirukalyanam or Meenakshi Kalyanam, celebrated in the beginning of April or the Tamil month of Chithirai.

Vaigai River

  • Originates from the ‘Varushnad’ hills of western Tamil Nadu.
  • It initially flows north-east through the Cumbum and Varushnad valleys and flows into the Palk Strait, which separates the south-eastern coast of India from Sri Lanka.
  • Tributaries: Siruliyar, Theniar, Varaha River and Mangalar.

Meenakshi Temple of Madurai

  • Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is a historic Hindu temple located on the south bank of the Vaigai River in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
  • This temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, a form of Shakti/Parvati, and her husband Shiva, in the form of Sundareshwar.
