  • Irish author Paul Lynch has won the Booker Prize 2023 for the novel “Prophet Song”.
  • He was awarded this literary award worth 50,000 pounds ($63,000) at a ceremony in London.
  • 46-year-old Lynch’s novel ‘Prophet Song’ shows a picture of an Ireland in the grip of autocracy.
  • The award was presented to Paul Lynch by Sri Lankan writer Shehan Karunathilaka at an awards ceremony held at Old Billingsgate, London.
  • It is noteworthy that Karunathilaka was last year’s Booker winner for ‘The Seven Moons of Mali Almeida’.

Booker prize

  • Established in 1969, the Booker Prize rewards an English-language novel from any country published in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
  • Paul Lynch becomes the fifth Irish author to win the Booker Prize. Earlier, Ireland’s Iris Murdoch, John Bienville, Roddy Doyle and Anne Enright had won this award.
  • The writers of India/Indian origin who have won this award are: V.S. Naipaul – In a Free State (1971), Salman Rushdie – Midnight’s Children (1981), Arundhati Roy – The God of Small Things (1997), Kiran Desai – The Inheritance of Loss (2006), Aravind Adiga – The White Tiger ( 2008).
