The relations with Ecuador have been suspended by Mexico.
Mexico took this action following the arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas.
On April 5, 2024, Jorge Glas was taken into custody by Ecuadorian officials from the Mexican embassy located in Quito.
Jorge Glas had been found guilty of corruption twice.
Since December, when he sought political asylum, Jorge Glas had been in embassy in Quito.
Before making the arrest, police forcibly entered Mexico’s embassy in Quito, according to Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Glas’s detention was described as an authoritarian act by the president of Mexico.
The president of Mexico declared that Glas’s detention violated both Mexican sovereignty and international law.
The president of Ecuador previously declared that their country is sovereign and that they would not permit any criminal to remain free.
