The fourth Nilgiri class ship under Project 17A and the third ship built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Taragiri, has been handed over to the Indian Navy. It was designed by the Warship Design Bureau, and its construction was supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai. The ship was constructed using the integrated construction philosophy and has been delivered to the Navy within the stipulated timeframe. The handover to the Navy is a landmark achievement towards achieving self-reliance in warship design and construction.

Taragiri: Key Features

¨     Taragiri is a reincarnation of its predecessor, INS Taragiri, which served the nation for 33 years from 1980 to 2013.

¨     The name “Taragiri” is derived from a mountain range in the Garhwal Himalayas.

¨     This state-of-the-art frigate represents a major leap in naval design, stealth capabilities, firepower, automation, and survivability, and symbolizes self-reliance in warship construction.

¨     Built with 75% indigenous content, the project involved over 200 MSMEs and directly employed approximately 4,000 personnel and indirectly over 10,000 personnel.

¨     These ships are configured with Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion plants, comprising a diesel engine and a gas turbine driving a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) on each shaft, and a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). • The powerful weapons and sensor suite jointly include a combination of BrahMos SSM, MFSTAR and MRSAM complexes, 76 mm SRGM, and 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon systems, as well as rockets and torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare.

¨     The construction period was reduced to 81 months due to the experience gained from previous ships of this class.
