World Coconut Day is celebrated on 2 September to commemorate the formation of the Asian Pacific Coconut Community (APCC).
APCC is headquartered in Jakarta Indonesia and all major coconut producing countries including India are members of APCC.
On 2 September the world celebrates one of nature’s healthiest foods and promotes the use and importance of coconuts.
The coconut, also known as ‘Shri Phala’ in Sanskrit and ‘Nariyal’ in Hindi, is a member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae) and the only living species of the genus Cocos.
A large portion of the coconut supply, about 75%, is produced by Indonesia, the Philippines and India combined.
The first World Coconut Day was held in 2009 to commemorate the creation of the APCC.
