'National Maritime Day': April 5

¨     In India, 'National Maritime Day' is celebrated every year on April 5. This day was observed for the first time on April 5, 1964.

¨     It is a day to commemorate India's maritime history, highlight the significance of maritime trade, and honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to this sector.

¨     Historical Significance: On April 5, 1919, the 'SS Loyalty'—the first indigenous merchant vessel of the 'Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd.'—set sail from Mumbai for London.

¨     Objective: To raise awareness regarding maritime trade and to honor the contributions of the Merchant Navy.

¨     Award: On this occasion, an award named "Varuna" is presented for outstanding work in the maritime sector.
