National Statistical Office will conduct a nationwide survey on migration during the period July 2026 to June 2027

¨     The National Statistical Office will conduct a nationwide survey on migration during the period July 2026 to June 2027.

¨     The objective of this survey is to collect updated and comprehensive data on migration patterns in India.

¨     The survey will document the prevalence of migration in the country, the characteristics of migrants, reasons for return migration, seasonal migration, and the employment profiles of migrants.

¨     Migration from rural areas to cities and inter-state migration will also be covered.

¨     The National Statistical Office (NSO) functions under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

¨     MoSPI has conducted migration surveys regularly in the past.

¨     The latest data is available from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2020-21 and the Multi-Indicator Survey 2020-21.

¨     According to PLFS 2020-21, the overall migration rate in India was 28.9 percent.

¨     The survey clearly revealed a gender disparity in migration patterns.

¨     At the national level, male migration was 10.7 percent, while female migration was significantly higher at 47.9 percent.

¨     The primary reason for female migration was marriage. Approximately 86.8 percent of female migrants migrated due to marriage.

¨     The main reason for male migration was employment. About 22.8 percent of men migrated in search of work or better job opportunities.
