National Vaccination Day 2026: March 16
¨
National Vaccination Day
2026 is observed annually in India on March 16. This day is celebrated to raise
awareness about the importance of vaccination and to honor the efforts of
healthcare workers and policymakers.
¨
This day commemorates the
launch of the Pulse Polio Program in 1995, when the first dose of the Oral
Polio Vaccine was administered across the entire country. This national
campaign played a pivotal role in eradicating polio from India.
¨ National Vaccination Day
underscores the crucial role that vaccines play in disease prevention and in
safeguarding public health.
National Vaccination Day 2026
¨
National Vaccination Day
2026 serves as a reminder of the critical importance of vaccination in preventing
infectious diseases and protecting communities. On this day, tribute is paid to
the efforts of the healthcare workers, volunteers, and policymakers who conduct
vaccination drives across the country.
¨
India's vaccination
program is one of the largest in the world, given the country's vast population
and diverse geographical terrain. Despite challenges such as remote regions and
dense populations, vaccination campaigns have successfully reached millions of
people, protecting both children and adults from numerous preventable diseases.
History of National Vaccination Day
¨
The history of National
Vaccination Day in India is inextricably linked to the Pulse Polio Program. On
March 16, 1995, under the aegis of this campaign, the first dose of the Oral
Polio Vaccine was administered nationwide. The objective of this program was to
ensure that every child received the polio vaccine and to facilitate the
eradication of polio from the country.
¨
Thanks to sustained
vaccination campaigns and robust public health initiatives, the World Health
Organization (WHO) declared India a polio-free nation on March 27, 2014.
Discovery of Vaccination and Edward Jenner
¨
The concept of
vaccination is traced back to a discovery made in 1798 by the British physician
Edward Jenner. He discovered that exposure to cowpox (Vaccinia) could provide
humans with protection against a fatal disease like smallpox. Prior to this, a
method known as 'variolation' was employed, in which material extracted from
smallpox lesions was introduced into healthy individuals.
India's Major Immunization Programs
¨
India has launched
several significant immunization programs aimed at preventing infectious
diseases and improving public health. Periodically, the government has
incorporated various new vaccines under its national immunization campaigns.
Key vaccines include
¨
Inactivated Polio Vaccine
(IPV) – Launched nationally in 2016.
¨
Rotavirus Vaccine (RVV) –
Introduced in 2016 to protect children against diarrhea.
¨
Measles-Rubella (MR)
Vaccine – Launched in 2017, targeting millions of children.
¨
Pneumococcal Conjugate
Vaccine (PCV) – Introduced in 2017 to reduce infant mortality caused by
pneumonia.
¨ Tetanus and Adult Diphtheria (Td) Vaccine – Implemented for adolescents and pregnant women.
