Utkal Divas, also known as Odisha
Foundation Day: April 1
¨ Utkal Divas, also known
as Odisha Foundation Day, is celebrated annually on April 1 to commemorate the
establishment of the state of Odisha (in 1936).
¨
It serves as a
remembrance of the long struggle of the Odia people for a distinct identity
based on language and culture. Utkal Divas 2025 will be celebrated with great
enthusiasm across Odisha, recognizing the state's rich heritage and historical
significance.
Why is Utkal Divas celebrated?
¨
Prior to 1936, Odisha was
part of the Bengal Presidency, along with Bihar and Jharkhand. The demand for a
separate state for Odia-speaking people began to gain momentum in the early
20th century.
¨ Under the leadership of
eminent personalities such as Madhusudan Das, Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, and
Fakir Mohan Senapati, this demand was finally recognized, and Odisha became the
first state in India to be formed on a linguistic basis.
¨
On April 1, 1936, the
British government officially separated Odisha from the Bihar and Orissa
Province, thereby making it an independent administrative entity.
¨
This historic event is
celebrated annually as Odisha State Foundation Day.
