History of World Press Freedom Day

day was laid on May 3, 1991, in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. During a
meeting, African journalists adopted the 'Windhoek Declaration,' aimed at
promoting press freedom, pluralism, and independence.

UNESCO's Recommendation:
In 1991, the 26th General Conference of UNESCO acknowledged this historic
declaration and recommended the establishment of an international day.

Recognition by the United
Nations: Following UNESCO's recommendation, the United Nations General Assembly
officially proclaimed May 3 as 'World Press Freedom Day' in December 1993.
