¨     UNESCO's Recommendation: In 1991, the 26th General Conference of UNESCO acknowledged this historic declaration and recommended the establishment of an international day.

¨     Recognition by the United Nations: Following UNESCO's recommendation, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed May 3 as 'World Press Freedom Day' in December 1993.
