International Women's Day : March 8

¨  Every year, March 8 is celebrated as International Women's Day. In 2026, International Women's Day will be celebrated on Sunday.

¨  This day not only raises awareness about women's dignity but also about their achievements and gender equality.

¨  International Women's Day is celebrated to honor women's rights, equality, respect, and their social, economic, cultural, and political contributions.

What is the significance of Women's Day?

¨     The purpose of Women's Day is not only to honor women but also to raise awareness about their rights and equal opportunities. This day reminds us that even today, in many places, women lack equality in education, employment, and the right to make decisions in their own favor.

¨     This occasion inspires society to reflect and take steps towards change. Women's Day also teaches us that when women receive the right opportunities and respect, they can play a vital role in the progress of society and the country through their abilities in every field.

What is the theme of Women's Day 2026?

¨  Each year, a specific theme is set for International Women's Day, reflecting that year's purpose and message. This tradition began in 1996. Last year, in 2025, the theme was 'Accelerate Action,' while the theme for Women's Day 2026 is 'Give to Gain.'

¨   The main message of this theme is that when society provides women with support and opportunities to advance, the entire society benefits.

¨    When women succeed in fields such as education, leadership, business, science, arts, and politics, they bring glory to everyone from the family to the country.

History of this day

¨     Many years ago, in 1908, approximately 15,000 women protested in New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote.

¨     This protest can be considered the foundation of International Women's Day.

¨  Approximately two years later, in 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed celebrating International Women's Day at a conference in Copenhagen.

¨  In 1911, Women's Day was first celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
