Day is celebrated annually on 24 April. It was introduced to strengthen local
governance in India.
- The day is historically
significant because of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, which came
into force on 24 April 1993. This amendment granted constitutional status to
Panchayati Raj Institutions and strengthened grassroots democracy.

three-tier Panchayati Raj system (Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti, Zila
