World Hemophilia Day : April 17
¨
World Hemophilia Day is
observed every year on April 17. This year's theme, "Diagnosis: The First
Step to Care," underscores the importance of diagnosis—which is the
essential first step toward treatment and care.
¨ The World Hemophilia
Organization estimates that globally, more than three-quarters of people
suffering from hemophilia remain undiagnosed; in the case of other bleeding
disorders, the situation is even more critical.
¨ This means that millions
of people worldwide still lack access to basic healthcare. We possess both the
power and the shared commitment to change this. We can improve diagnostic
outcomes by strengthening the skills of healthcare professionals and enhancing
the effectiveness of laboratories.
What are the symptoms of hemophilia
¨
Prolonged bleeding
following an injury
¨
Swelling and pain in the
joints
¨
Unexplained nosebleeds
¨
Delayed healing even of
minor wounds
¨
Appearance of bruises or
blue marks on the body
World Hemophilia Day was first initiated in 1989 by
the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH). This date was chosen to coincide with
the birthday of the WFH's founder, Frank Schnabel. Its objective is to raise
global awareness regarding this condition and to ensure that patients have
access to better treatment.
