CDC Declares Hantavirus Outbreak a Level-3
Emergency Response
¨
Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention declared the hantavirus outbreak a Level-3 Emergency
Response on 8 May 2026.
¨
It is the agency’s lowest
emergency response category.
¨
The category is used for
active monitoring, activation of emergency operations centres, and deployment
of expert support teams.
¨
The outbreak has drawn
the attention of international health agencies.
¨
Hantavirus Infection is a
group of viruses mainly spread through contact with the urine, saliva, or
droppings of infected rodents.
¨
The virus can also enter
the human body through inhalation in contaminated environments.
¨
Hantavirus infection can
cause severe respiratory illness and other health complications.
¨
The outbreak involves the
rare Andes strain of hantavirus.
¨
Scientific studies have
discussed the possibility of limited human-to-human transmission of this
strain.
¨
World Health Organization
clarified that the situation is unlikely to develop into a large-scale pandemic
similar to COVID-19.
¨
The outbreak was linked
to the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius.
¨
The vessel is operated by
Oceanwide Expeditions.
¨
Around 150 passengers
from 23 different countries were on board the ship.
¨ The first confirmed case on the vessel was reported on 2 May 2026.
¨ Several passengers later developed symptoms of infection.
