Oil India Limited announced the discovery of a new natural gas reserve in the nominated Dandewala area of Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan

¨     Oil India Limited announced the discovery of a new natural gas reserve in the nominated Dandewala area of Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan, on 22 May 2026.

¨     The discovery marks the first successful establishment of natural gas in the shallow Sanu Formation within the Dandewala area.

¨     The Dandewala area is located in western Rajasthan and is associated with hydrocarbon exploration in the Rajasthan Basin.

¨     Oil India Limited operates nominated fields in India under the petroleum exploration and production framework.

¨     The exploration well was drilled to a depth of around 950 metres.

¨     During testing, the well recorded an average natural gas flow of about 25,000 Standard Cubic Metres per Day (SCMD).

¨     Initial estimates suggest that the new field contains around 75 Million Standard Cubic Metres (MMSCM) of gas reserves.

¨     Gas reserves refer to the total estimated quantity of natural gas present in a reservoir before production begins.

¨     The gas discovered in the new field contains relatively low carbon dioxide content.

¨     The Sanu Formation is a shallow geological unit within the Dandewala area and forms part of the sedimentary sequence of western Rajasthan.

¨     Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, mentioned the discovery on 23 May 2026.

¨     Natural gas is classified as a fossil fuel and is used in power generation, fertiliser production, industrial heating, and city gas distribution.
