Stratified Settlement Discovered at Major
Archaeological Site in Mohane River Basin, Hazaribagh
¨
An important
archaeological site has been discovered in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand in
the Mohane River basin of the Chauparan block, showing evidence of a stratified
settlement.
¨
The site includes
villages such as Dehar, Sohra, Mangarh, and Hathinder, where artefacts were
found during agricultural and foundation excavation activities.
¨
The archaeological
evidence is linked to a settlement dating back approximately 3,200 years.
¨
The findings span
multiple historical periods and include habitation layers, debris zones, and
buried structural remains.
¨
Evidence of several large
underground structures has also been identified, indicating multi-period
occupation.
¨
Teams from IIT-ISM
Dhanbad and Visva-Bharati University conducted surveys of the site.
¨
Ground Penetrating Radar
(GPR) technology was used for subsurface investigation.
¨
The survey detected
multiple anomalies beneath the surface.
¨
These include massive
buried structures extending over 100 feet in length.
¨
Artefacts recovered
include Black Slipped Ware pottery associated with the early historical period
of South Asia.
¨
Samples of Northern Black
Polished Ware have also been found.
¨
Sculptural remains of
Gautama Buddha, Tara, Marichi, Avalokiteshvara, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva (Mahesh),
and Ganesha were also discovered.
¨
Historians, scientists,
and conservationists have called for protection of the site.
¨ They have urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to intervene for its preservation.
¨ A large mound in Mangarh village has been identified as a possible ancient Buddhist stupa dating back approximately 2,500–3,000 years.
