¨     Maharashtra completed physical verification of 23,404 wetlands out of 23,415 identified wetlands by 19-20 May 2026.

¨     The remaining 11 wetlands are located in Pune district.

¨     Verified maps will be sent to district administrations and the State Wetland Authority for notification.

¨     The process is being carried out under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules.

¨     Wetland documentation in India includes preparing records of water bodies such as lakes, marshes, ponds, and mangroves.

¨     The documentation process involves satellite mapping, field verification, and inventory preparation.

¨     The National Wetland Inventory and Assessment is a nationwide exercise.

¨     Its objective is to identify and classify wetlands across states and Union Territories.

¨  The Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules provide the legal framework for wetland conservation and regulation in India.

¨ State Wetland Authorities are responsible for coordinating conservation measures and processing wetland notifications.

¨  Ahmednagar district has the highest number of wetlands in Maharashtra with 1,596 wetlands.

¨     Nashik district has 1,236 wetlands.

¨     Chandrapur district has 1,231 wetlands.
