27 July 2026 marked the 87th Foundation Day of the Central Reserve Police Force

¨     27 July 2026 marked the 87th Foundation Day of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

¨     The day commemorates the establishment of the CRPF, India's largest Central Armed Police Force (CAPF).

¨     It honours the bravery, sacrifice, and dedicated service of CRPF personnel.

¨     The CRPF plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order, counter-terrorism operations, combating Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), providing election security, and disaster rescue and relief operations.

¨     The force is committed to protecting India's unity, democracy, and constitutional values.

¨     The CRPF was originally established in 1939 as the Crown Representative's Police during British rule.

¨     After Independence, the CRPF Act, 1949 was enacted by Parliament.

¨     On 28 December 1949, the force was officially renamed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

¨     Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister, envisioned the CRPF as a force capable of addressing the country's internal security challenges.

¨     During the 1950s, the CRPF played an important role in the integration of princely states into the Indian Union.

¨     It helped restore law and order in regions such as Junagadh, Kathiawar, and PEPSU (Patiala and East Punjab States Union).

¨     On 21 October 1959, 10 CRPF personnel were martyred in the Hot Springs area during an ambush by Chinese forces.

¨     Their sacrifice is commemorated every year as Police Commemoration Day on 21 October.

¨     The day honours all police personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty.
