• ¨     Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in as the 36th President of Colombia on 7 August 2026.

    ¨     His presidential term will run from 2026 to 2030.

    ¨     He succeeded Gustavo Petro, whose government was Colombia’s first left-wing administration at the national level.

    ¨     The President of Colombia serves as both the Head of State and Head of Government.

    ¨     Under the 1991 Constitution of Colombia, the presidential term is four years.

    ¨     The President is elected through direct popular voting.

    ¨     In the runoff election held on 21 June 2026, De la Espriella won with 12,960,166 votes (49.66%).

    ¨     His opponent, Iván Cepeda of the Historic Pact, received 48.70% of the vote.

    ¨     The inauguration ceremony was held at the USC Arena at Santiago de Cali University in Cali, instead of Bogotá.

    ¨  Honorio Henríquez, President of the Senate and Speaker of Congress, administered the presidential oath to De la Espriella.

    ¨     De la Espriella later administered the oath to Vice President José Manuel Restrepo.
