Assam launched a
statewide drug disposal campaign.
¨
The campaign was held at
the 14th Assam Police Battalion Ground in Daulasal, Nalbari district.
¨
Narcotic and psychotropic
substances worth ₹472.51 crore were destroyed during the campaign.
¨
Assam also inaugurated its
first Narcotics Incinerator at Daulasal.
¨
The disposal process
involved crushing and controlled burning of the seized contraband.
¨
A road roller was used to
crush the seized substances before incineration.
¨
The destruction process
was scheduled to continue for 10 days.
¨
The destroyed consignment
included:

60 kg of heroin
¨
38,000 kg of ganja
¨
39 kg of morphine
¨
4.97 lakh tablets of
various psychotropic substances
¨
These substances are
regulated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act,
1985.
¨
Over the last five years,
Assam Police registered more than 3,300 cases under the NDPS Act.
¨
During the same period,
drugs worth over ₹3,227 crore were seized in the state.
¨
The Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 is the principal law governing
narcotics control in India.
¨
Heroin is a
semi-synthetic opioid derived from morphine.
¨
Ganja is a cannabis
product regulated under the NDPS Act.
¨
Incineration is the
standard method used for the safe destruction of seized narcotic substances.
