¨     Assam tabled The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026 in the Assam Legislative Assembly on 25 May 2026.

¨     Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora introduced the Bill on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

¨     The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a proposed legal framework dealing with personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession.

¨     Article 44 of the Constitution of India places the Uniform Civil Code under the Directive Principles of State Policy.

¨     The Assam UCC Bill fixes the minimum marriage age at 21 years for men and 18 years for women.

¨     It prohibits polygamy.

¨     The Bill provides equal property rights for daughters.

¨     It also makes registration of live-in relationships compulsory.

¨     Tribal communities in Assam’s hill and plain areas are exempted from the provisions of the Bill.

¨     Their traditional religious customs and practices are also kept outside the scope of the proposed law.

¨     The Assam Cabinet approved the draft Uniform Civil Code Bill on 13 May 2026.

¨     The Bill was scheduled for discussion and possible passage in the Assembly on 27 May 2026.
