Bangladesh and China discussed the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project.

¨     Bangladesh and China discussed the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project during Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to Beijing .

¨     The project aims to improve river management, flood control, bank protection, and infrastructure development along the Teesta River.

¨     Major components include dredging, embankment construction, land reclamation, and road development.

¨     The project proposes to dredge 140 million cubic metres of river sediment and reclaim 171 square kilometres of land.

¨     It also includes repairing 110 km of existing embankments and constructing 124 km of new embankments.

¨     The project plans to develop a 224-km road network and build 82 jetty facilities.

¨     The Teesta River flows through India and Bangladesh and is part of the eastern Himalayan river system.

¨     The Teesta River basin has remained an important subject of India–Bangladesh bilateral water-sharing discussions for several years.

¨  China stated that its cooperation on the Teesta project is not directed against any third party.

¨  China also offered to share water management expertise and train Bangladeshi water experts and officials in China.
