Bangladesh Nears Nuclear Power Era with
Fuel Loading at Rooppur Plant
¨
Bangladesh has taken a
major step in its energy sector.
¨
Uranium fuel loading has
begun at Unit-1 of the Rooppur nuclear plant.
¨
This is the final major
step before nuclear power generation begins.
¨
Bangladesh is close to
becoming the 33rd country to produce nuclear energy.
¨
The project will
strengthen energy security.
¨
It will help reduce
dependence on fossil fuels.
¨
It will promote clean and
sustainable energy.
¨
After fuel loading,
Nuclear Fission will begin.
¨
Several safety tests will
be conducted before power generation.
¨
Around 300 MW electricity
may be supplied to the grid by August 2026 (trial basis).
¨
Full commercial operation
may take about 10 months.
¨
Rooppur Nuclear Power
Plant is the country’s largest infrastructure project.
¨
It is operated by the
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission.
¨
Technical and financial
support is provided by Rosatom.
¨
The plant has 2 units.
¨
Each unit has a capacity
of 1,200 MW.
¨
Total installed capacity
is 2,400 MW.
