  • ¨   The Central Government has decided to extend Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III (PMGSY-III) from March 2025 to March 2028.
  •    The decision was approved in a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  •     The aim is to enhance rural connectivity by linking villages with agricultural markets, schools, hospitals, and essential services.
  •          The total cost of the scheme has been increased from ₹80,250 crore to ₹83,977 crore.
  •     This move is seen as a step towards strengthening rural infrastructure and promoting inclusive development.

Key Approvals under PMGSY-III

  • ¨     The timeline for construction of roads and bridges has been extended.
  •            In plain areas, construction of roads and bridges will continue till March 2028.
  •           In hilly areas, road construction will also continue till March 2028.
  •      However, for bridges in hilly areas, the deadline has been extended to March 2029.
  •      Projects approved before 31 March 2025 but not yet tendered will now be included in the
  •      bidding process, speeding up execution and reducing delays.

  ocus on Long Span Bridges (LSBs)

  • ¨     The Cabinet approved 161 Long Span Bridges (LSBs).
  •         The estimated cost of these bridges is ₹961 crore.
  •     These bridges are located on already approved road routes but had not received separate approval earlier.
  •         Their construction will improve connectivity, especially in remote and hilly regions.
  •         In many rural areas, roads exist but lack of bridges disrupts transportation.
  •     These bridges will ensure smooth and continuous rural connectivity.
