Defence Ministry Approves 250 MW Solar
Project with Battery Storage in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh
¨
The Ministry of Defence
approved a 250 MW solar power project with a Battery Energy Storage System
(BESS) in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh on 9 June 2026.
¨
The project site is an
ex-cantonment area and will utilise around 850 acres of vacant defence land.
¨
The project will be
implemented through NTPC Limited.
¨
A solar power project
generates electricity by converting sunlight using photovoltaic panels or solar
thermal systems.
¨
A Battery Energy Storage
System (BESS) stores electricity for later use and helps ensure power supply
during periods of low generation or peak demand.
¨
BESS improves grid
stability by managing variability in solar power output due to weather and
daylight conditions.
¨
The integration of solar
power with storage supports reliable and continuous renewable energy supply.
¨
The project aims to
enhance clean energy generation and improve utilisation of defence land for
productive purposes.
¨
Key stakeholders include
the Ministry of Defence, Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army),
and the Directorate General Defence Estates.
¨ Competitive bidding will be used for selecting the project developer or contractor based on technical and financial evaluation.
¨ The initiative supports India’s broader goals of expanding renewable energy capacity and promoting sustainable infrastructure development.
