On 30 December, the
former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)
Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has passed away after a prolonged illness.

She had been admitted to
hospital on November 23 following serious heart and lung complications.

Khaleda Zia served as
Bangladesh’s first woman Prime Minister and completed two terms in office.
¨
She served as the prime
minister of Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006.
¨
She was also the second
female prime minister in the Muslim world after Benazir Bhutto.
¨
Khaleda Zia was the widow
of former Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman.
¨
PM Narendra Modi
expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his former Bangladeshi counterpart,
Khaleda Zia.
¨
PM Modi said that her contributions
to the development of the neighboring country, as well as to India-Bangladesh
relations, will always be remembered.
